Serfer During 2015 I spent a lot of time around the ocean while living near the coast in Rarotonga. When at the beach I would observe the colour of the water, how the light would hit it at different times and the patterns of breaking waves. A favourite spot to hangout was at the Avana harbour, where the reef is broken and you can sit and watch the waves rolling into the lagoon. After returning to Auckland I needed work and took a job labouring for Allied Work Force. This job sent me to large construction sites where I would navigate a labyrinth of scaffolding and service elevators, usually carting a load of tile cement or building waste. At this time, thinking of the tropical waves I had been around, took on associations of freedom. The idea of water, in contrast with the grimey drudgery of labour became a sci-fi utopia, a glassy plane of personal liberty. I tried to capture this quality of water in my Serfer series. Though the intention was to recreate the lightness and movement of a wave in the painted surface, I was conscious of the heaviness of labour that is embedded in production. My technique involves repeatedly beating the painting support (aluminium or brass) with a mallet and nail punch to emboss the surface. It is a loud, menial, laborious process and sees me wearing a lot of the PPE (personal protective equipment) goggles, gloves and ear muffs that I wore on the construction sites. It is this contradiction that I found interesting; trying to depict a free space through a restrictive labour. Sam Thomas
