Mirage is an Auckland-based contemporary art space with a curatorial commitment to showing work coming out of the Asia-Pacific region today.
Named by artist Sam Thomas (who took the cue from Dunedin-based art space Blue Oyster) to playfully name the gallery after a bar, he chose to adapt the name of the old Auckland Night club Club Mirage that once shared the same location as the Artist-run space Snake Pit Thomas started in 2011 with artist James Wylie.

Club Mirage was also the name of the final show by the artists from Snake Pit at Sue Crockford gallery.
Mirage was settled upon as the name for the new space when it opened its doors in Parnell to pay homage to both of the now-closed Auckland spaces.
Today, located at 93 The Strand Mirage operates as a gallery space, artist studios and offers a small-scale project space called The BOX.
All vibrant and cultured cities around the world and throughout history have made it possible for artists to find affordable, professional studios to work. So, despite Auckland rent being what it is, we are proud to say that we work hard to make quality studio spaces available to NZ artists at an affordable cost.
Current artists in the Mirage studios are:
Studio 1 – Fu-On Chung and Joseph Nerney
Studio 2 – Sam Thomas
Studio 3 - Rosanna Raymond
Studio 4 – Lola Rose and Rebecca June Wright
All studio spaces are currently occupied. If you are interested in a space in the future you can email firstname.lastname@example.org for details.
Mirage is also proud to be one of few spaces in Auckland city that offer a dedicated residency program.
Te Arerenga is the name of the residency space located on the sunny island of Rarotonga.
To undertake a residency at Te Arerenga please email proposals to email@example.com
Mirage is not accepting proposals for shows in the gallery space at this time. If you are interested in showing at Mirage’s smaller-scale project space The BOX please email firstname.lastname@example.org
While curated shows are held monthly at the discretion of the Director, if you are interested in hiring the gallery space for a one-off event please email email@example.com for details.
